Home » Travel Tips for Traveling with Your Dog

Traveling is something that people love to do with their family and a dog should always be considered as a part of the family. This is the reason why many people want their dogs to travel with them anywhere that they go, whether it is by car, bus, train, or airplane.

Here are 10 tips for traveling with your dog:

 1    Use a crate

No one wants their dog to be cooped up in a crate, but this is the safest way for them to travel, especially when they are not in the car. There are a few things that every dog owner can do to make their dog feel happier in their crate. The owner should make the crate seem like it is a wonderful place to be, therefore the crate should never be used as a form of punishment. A dog should get a lot of exercise before they are let into a crate because they will be ready for a long nap when they are inside the crate. Placing a toy or two inside the crate is a wonderful idea, however, owners should make sure that there are no leashes, loose collars, or other items that can cause the dog to choke or become strangled.

2    Make frequent stops when driving

Everyone needs a break from driving and this is the perfect time for both the dog and their owner to stretch their legs. Spending 15 minutes playing and walking a dog will help the dog get tired out and ready for the next part of the road trip. This is also a good time to give the dog a little treat for being well-behaved.

3    Inquire if a health certificate is needed

Most of the time when a dog travels by plane, they need a health certificate that has been filled out by a veterinarian. Airlines want to make sure that the dog’s shots are up to date and that they do not have any disease that can harm other animals that are being transported at the same time.

4    Bring a favorite blanket or toy

A dog is like a child and they will feel more comfortable if they have a favorite blanket or toy to snuggle and play with when they are traveling. These objects can keep the dog calm during any stressful problems during the trip.

5    Stay at pet-friendly hotels

Not every hotel will welcome dogs and it is always best to make sure that they do before booking a room. Many pet-friendly hotels will have a list of places in the area where a person can take their dog for some exercise and other fun activities. Not every hotel is pet friendly especially if you are in India then the best option is to hire the best India tour company like HtoIndia which helps you to stay in hotels and have a great trip with your pet.

6    Identification

A dog should have at least one form of identification on them, especially when they are traveling. A dog collar should have a name and cell phone number on it and it is even better if proof of a rabies shot is included. A more permanent form of identification is a microchip and this can be handy if a dog manages to get out of their collar.

7    Fly direct

Direct flights are best when traveling with pets because there is less of a chance of them being left on the tarmac or worse yet, left off of the connecting flight.

8    Pack a travel kit

Dogs need a travel kit just like their owners do and these kits should include food, a bowl, leash, plastic bags, a scoop, medications, and travel documents. It is usually best to pack some extra water too, in case the trip takes longer than planned.

9    Dog life jacket

If an owner is planning on taking their dog on a boat during vacation, then a dog life jacket is a must. The life jacket can make it easier for the owner to grab their dog out of the water if it accidentally falls overboard.

10    Never leave a dog alone

Most dogs will bark and cause trouble if they are left alone in a place that they are not familiar with. Therefore, no owner should leave their dog alone in a hotel room or anywhere else while on vacation. When traveling by car, dogs should never be left inside the car alone, even if it is only for a minute. It does not take long for a dog to become overheated and dehydrated inside a car.

Traveling with a dog can be difficult, but if an owner prepares properly, it can be done without too many problems. The owner will then not have the guilt of leaving their dog at home and their dog will not need to be away from the person they love for any length of time.
